Homework

There are only 33 days left of school! We will be vey busy between now and the end of the year with our academics, and we are all rested and ready for a strong finish.  I only heard from one parent about homework; they were in favor of continuing, so our weekly homework packets with sight words and the reading log will continue until the end of the year.

We have a trip planned to the butterfly farm on Wednesday. We will leave school before lunch, and we'll have a picnic lunch at the farm, so please send a lunch with your child on Wednesday. Also, please send in booster/ carseats if your child needs them. The only other trip this month is the monthly field trip to the library which is scheduled for Thursday the 19th.

Primary Silent Auction Items

Our class has been working on some items for the silent auction which will take place the night of the play (Thursday). Included this year is a class quilt and bag featuring the kid's handprints. Be sure to check out the offerings while you are waiting for the play to start.

Please remember dismissal is different this week, and we look forward to seeing you for our Easter egg hunt this Thursday at 1:30!

Easter Egg Hunt

We have a lot to look forward to in the coming week with the school-wide play, auction and class egg-hunt! The following is a list of what to expect:
  • *Monday (3/26) we will have a whole-school rehearsal @ St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Car riders will dismiss from the church (108 W. Farriss Ave., HP). If your child is in after school and/or cooking club we will bring them back to campus and they can be picked up on campus at the regular time.
  • *Tuesday (3/27) -Same as Monday with whole-school rehearsal and pick-up at the church. This is the make-up day for cooking club: these students will be brought back to school.
  • *Wednesday (3/28) Same as Monday and Tuesday. No cooking club this day- please pick up your child at St. Mary's unless they are in after school only.
  • Thursday (3/29) -No play practice this day - dismissal at TPS for all students.
    • 1:30-2:20 We will have our class Easter egg hunt during this time; please join us on campus for this fun event! A big thank-you to Robin Wolfington (Cooper's mom) for organizing this for us!
    • 5:30 Please arrive at St. Mary's with your child dressed and ready to perform!
      • 5:15-5:30- silent auction
      • 6:00- play starts
*Monday-Wednesday I will be driving the van to the church, so please send in car/booster seats those days if your child requires them.

We will continue with our homework experiment next week. I haven't heard from anyone about whether they prefer having weekly words and a reading log, so unless I hear otherwise I will continue with the old homework routine when we return from Easter vacation.

2 trips this week

Tomorrow we will take our monthly trip to the library. Please send car/booster seats if necessary. Also, because of some positive feedback, we will be taking the class to the Compassion Experience on Friday. We will leave campus after lunch and we will return before dismissal. Please send car/booster seats on Friday as well as Thursday, or you are welcome to leave them at school overnight Thursday.

March Homework

Due to the snow day and delay this week, the North Carolina Reading Association's annual conference next week, and play practice the following week, we will not take class time to work on sight words. Therefore your child will not have their usual assigned sight or spelling words for the remainder of March. However, please continue to work on their "old" words at home. I'm also curious about reading logs and whether you feel they are helpful or hindering your child at home. Ideally, reading logs keep kids accountable, but I understand that they may be creating a dread of reading which is completely counterproductive. Let's forgo the log and just read with your kids, or have them read to you- hopefully for at least 20 minutes daily. We will re-assess moving forward with the logs in April, but I would love to hear your feedback.

As part of addressing the whole child we do our best to "teach" empathy & compassion and expose children to a variety of view points. This weekend at West Market St. United Methodist Church (GSO) The Compassion Experience will simulate the life of a child in different country. This is not something we will do as a class/school, but I wanted to share with you if you were interested as a family. Click here for details.

Flat Stanley and trip tomorrow

It's been a lot of fun to see all of the neat places that Stanley was able to visit! In just our class we were able to see him travel all over the world! The Flat Stanley project was a school-wide initiative, and we appreciate your participation. The upper grades will make trip-tic boards to present what they learned from this project; these will be on display in the hallway March 16th from 7-8. However, our class' work is permanently on display in the main hallway on the bulletin board. Be sure to check out all of Stanley's fun travels the next time you are on campus!

Speaking of travels, we will be traveling to the Apple Store at the Friendly Center tomorrow. We have been chosen to participate in the creation of a robot at the store! We will leave promptly at 8:00 tomorrow morning; if you are running late you may want to meet us at the Apple Store. Also, if your child requires a booster/carseat please send it with them tomorrow morning. We will return by 10:00 and will resume instruction at school.
